Customer Research is done in two ways
Primary Market Research
Research that you carry out yourself
Secondary Market Research
Where you use data
form published sources
The most valuable of these two types of research is that which
you carry out yourself. It can be very informative and often
generates ideas for products that you might never have thought
of.
By conducting primary research you will gain first hand knowledge
of the state of your market in your catchment area. Every
area or region has its own idiosyncrasies and it is important to
ascertain who they are.
Types of Survey Methods
Primary market research involves obtaining information from potential
customers in one of three ways: -
- A Personal Survey
- A Telephone Survey
- A Postal Survey
Which type of survey you choose will depend on:-
- the type of business
- where your potential customers are located
- how many questionnaires you want to get completed
It may be necessary to use two survey methods. You could
start with a brief telephone canvas and then follow up with a more
extensive postal survey.
